<div>The Museum of Broken Relationships, Chiang Mai, recently became a living classroom for students delving into the rich tapestry of colonial architecture. Our Yhong-Chieng Building, a storied structure dating back to 1904, played host to two distinct academic visits, each unraveling layers of its past and present.<br><br>In December, the Southeast Asian Neighborhood Network (<a href="https://seannet.org/">SEANNET</a>), an initiative focused on studying urban neighborhoods and historic buildings across Asia, led a workshop on colonial architecture in Chiang Mai. The initiative was led by Assoc. Prof. Komson Teeraparbwong, who teaches Architecture and Urbanism at Chiang Mai University, along with his research colleagues. <br><br>A team from Myanmar, working closely with Chiang Mai's SEANNET team, organized a three-day workshop on colonial architecture in Chiang Mai. They aimed to identify a representation of Chiang Mai’s colonial architecture and recognized the Yhong-Chieng Building as a significant case study. During their fieldwork at our museum, they meticulously measured, sketched, and analyzed architectural details to understand how this building has transformed from a historic trade-era structure, rich in Lanna and Chinese influences, into the contemporary museum space it is today.<br><br>Later in January, students from the Multidisciplinary Art program at <a href="https://www.cmu.ac.th/en/home">Chiang Mai University</a> visited as part of their field study on colonial architecture. Beyond its architectural significance, the students also explored how the museum integrates contemporary artistic practices with its historical space, gaining insights into the interplay between art and architecture in a museum setting.<br><br></div><div>Built during a time when Chiang Mai was a bustling hub of trade and cultural exchange between Lanna and Chinese communities, the Yhong-Chieng Building is a testament to this rich history.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>We are proud to bring art into this remarkable space, where history and contemporary expression coexist. These visits remind us that our museum is more than a collection of stories—it's a living story, becoming a part of the architectural and cultural fabric of Chiang Mai.<br><br></div>

A Student Exploration at the Museum of Broken Relationships, Chiang Mai

We met online as teenagers. It was a whirlwind thing- the first night we met, we were talking until 4am. We realised we'd both been at a concert a couple of years before and had vague memories of seeing each other there. It felt like a sign. It was conversations until the early hours of the morning for the following couple of weeks.
Being teenagers, we didn't get the chance to meet. We lived a good few hours away from each other and our parents weren't the biggest fans of meeting people online. It was a good few years of having to remove each other from social media and adding each other back, talking whenever we got the chance.
Eventually we both moved on and started dating other people. We most recently reconnected at 20 years old and it wasn't the same. Both of us knew that we'd have to leave each other one time too many and things were too different. He removed himself one last time and we haven't spoken since.
He was my best friend for the longest time and I miss him every day. I hope he got the wonderful life he deserves and that one day we'll get to meet in real life.
